Ken Appleby
ken appleby
began playing guitar in his early teens using an instrument his older brother brought back from a school trip to Spain.
After years trying to play like John Renbourn and Bert Jansch, and on the advice of Robin Williamson of The Incredible String Band who he met in McCabe‘s guitar shop in Santa Monica, he switched to trying to play like himself and got better results.
With many years of experience performing and arranging he now has very much his own style.
With Emma Stone and formerly with Catherine Kinsey he is a writer, co-writer and arranger of Appleby Stone‘s original material.

Emma is a naturally gifted musician. She has been playing flute since the age of 8 and saxophone since the age of 14.
As well as being a virtuosic improviser she also writes and co-writes much of the band‘s new material. She is a vital creative energy in the group, bringing original ideas and spontaneity to rehearsals. She is also a much-valued and in-demand teacher, a talented and sensitive interpreter of songs and a superb vocalist.
Emma also has a wonderful, generous ability to bring together and nurture musical ideas from the musicians she works with.
She has hundreds of performances under her belt including the main stage at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. Emma was educated at Dartington College from where she received a degree in Music Performance.
Paul Smith

On double bass and 5-string electric upright bass Paul brings a mountain of experience and considerable creative talent to the ensemble.
He has been playing bass for around 40 years, which, he claims, works out at 10 years per string. A little banjo playing will also appear in his repertoire.
He is a regular member of another hugely popular local band whose style is as far removed from Appleby Stone as could be, which shows his wonderful talent and versatility.
Paul also spends many hours a week helping others in charitable causes.
